Most of the people pick up a game engine with the hopes of making the types of games they likely play but Unfortunately, this often just is not possible. Because games like GTA or PUBG are made by teams 100 people or more, sometimes way more than 100 people over the course of several years.

Even if you’re so good at it and you throw your whole life into developing games, you’re not going to make games like that, ot even close, especially not on your first attempt at least and the truth is, you’re not even going to create something like Super Mario Bros. for your first game. Your target as for your first game should be to get something built that you could actually just play, properly with basic controls. So just think of your first project as a learning exercise, not some hit title of the year thing.

Take Small Steps

If you start with a big project, you’ll find yourself in a position where you won’t even know where to start from and you’ll just get frustrated or bored and it will seem like you’re not making any progress at all, and you’ll hit roadblocks that you don’t know how to get over, simply to be left wondering for what to even work on next time so just take my word for it, just keep it small and real.

Be Proud of Small Achievements

If your first game project turns out to be a simple platformer with bad collisions that you took weeks to build, be proud of that, because you built it. You actually got it done. You made a game which is like more than what most people ever manage to do so don’t forget that and have fun playing it and don’t worry when they don’t understand it or are critical because they’re still thinking in terms of the big games that you once dreamt of making and one day you might.

So only you, know how much work went into making that game, and more importantly, you know that next time you’ll be able to make a much better game and much faster and soon, you’ll be building games that people are asking you to let them play.

Be Flexible with Your Game Idea

Other thing to keep in mind is don’t go into your first game with a specific or concrete idea, Instead, learn what you can do, and then design around that. Don’t lock yourself into an idea and beat your head against it for weeks or months.

Learn new things, watch a few tutorials, then start working towards something you’re pretty sure you can build. It’s okay if there are still a few things that just you have no idea of how to even start with but make sure it’s only a few parts when you’re breaking your projects down and planning things out.

Get Help

It’s okay to get stuck with parts of game that you cannot figure out on your own because there are people who happily make tutorials about pretty much everything out there, so go find them. Study them and even then, if you’re stuck or if you can’t find answers to your question, all you need to do is just ask. You’d be shocked at how many people are happy to help you through things.

Don’t be Afraid of Coding

Lots of people say that they can’t code, but if you do it right, you would be shocked at how little coding you actually have to do to get something done. It’s a small enough amount that any of you out there reading this right now, can surely handle it. So just keep it simple and small. You’ll learn as you go, and there are plenty of sites out there that’ll help get you started and get you out of trouble.

Understand Your Skills

Part of understanding your scope is understanding your resources and, like are you good at art but you’ve never coded?

Well in that case, have your game lean more on your art skills while pushing you just enough on the code side that you learn some new things on the way.

Or are you somebody who can’t draw or model but great at coding? That’s alright too as there are plenty of games out there that get away with what you’d call minimum graphics so just accept that work around your own skillset.

Don’t Give Up!

There are a lot of things that get in the way like most people start out doing this between looking for a job or a full school schedule and it’s very, very easy to let days and then weeks pass before you get back to working on your game. It’s not going to be an easy task, so yeah there’s that but all I can say is that most things worth doing are a struggle and if you keep up with it, who know maybe one day you’ll have the option to make games instead of having to do all that other stuff.

So yeah, You have to be there and make efforts, It’s sure going to take a lot of time but be certain that eventually, things will work out for you too!
